Una observacion para Mozart: estoy de acuerdo con que el disco de Beck es increible, pero el DVD-Audio lo que incluye, aparte de mezclas es estereo y 5.1 en alta resolucion, son 6 videos musicales de las canciones del album, uno de los cuales fue dirigido por el ex marido de Sofia Coppola (Lost In Translation).
Juraría que es lo que yo he dicho, que el DVD-A trae aparte de música DVD-A una serie de vídeos.

Yo tengo "Tommy" en DVD-Audio. Se considera que la version en DVD-Audio es la mas cercana al origen ya que se paso a PCM para mezclarla y de ahi a DSD para el SACD.
La versión SACD estéreo de Tommy se hizo a partir de las cintas originales (analógicas claro). De ello da fe el propio ingeniero Jon Astley en esta interesante entrevista cuya lectura os recomiendo:

Transcribo lo que dice al respecto Astley, que concluye con la frase: "[en la versión SACD estéreo] el master original se puede escuchar en alta resolución por primera vez". La cita completa en inglés es:

"When I was asked to remaster the Who catalogue, I
couldn’t find any Tommy masters at all in the MCA
(Universal) vaults. I asked Pete if he had an idea where
the tapes were and he said ‘Oh, Kit Lambert burnt
them. When he finished mastering it in LA in 1969,
Kit set .re to it in a waste paper basket.’ This was a
story that has been elaborated on and blown up out of
all proportion. More recently I was after a very good
copy of Pinball Wizard for The Ultimate Who collection,
I asked a different guy at the vault, and he sent me a
DSD copy. It sounded fantastic so I asked where it
came from and they said ‘Um, er — we think it might
be the master reel’ ... so now I have them here with me!
Universal suggested we use the originals for the
SACD stereo layer — I thought that would be nice. So
the original master is heard in high resolution for the
very first time."

Para las versiones multicanal se partió de una mezcla de altísima resolución (192k) preparada por el autor de Tommy, Peter Townshend. De ahí se crearon dos master distintos, uno PCM para la versión DVD-A y otro DSD para la versión SACD. Las grabaciones DVD-A multicanal y SACD multicanal se realizaron por tanto a partir de masters distintos y como proyectos e ideas distintas, como se explica en la entrevista citada.

Volviendo al SACD estéreo, no he escuchado Tommy, pero ya me parecía raro que habiendo críticas tan positivas sobre su sonido en SACD éste hubiese sido obtenido a partir de un master PCM (lo cual casi siempre da resultados muy pobres). Entre otras críticas podéis ver estas:

En particular, es interesante el comentario de un aficionado que dice haber poseido todas las versiones de Tommy y decantarse finalmente por la versión SACD:

"Between tapes, vinyl, original (wretch-book) CDs, and the MFSL gold release I have owned at least a dozen versions of this Pete Townshend opera. I have also heard it live through the Sony Isle Of Wight release and the most recent "complete" Live At Leeds release. I can confidentially say that I am pretty familiar with all its warts (drop-offs, poor drum mix, poor bass mix, overmixed guitars, etc.)

By far the best rendition/re-issue of this product, geometrically enhanced by the SACD mastering technique. Of the 65+ SACDs I now own, this is one of my top 5 pop/jazz must haves."

Acabo citando de nuevo al ingeniero que produjo las versiones SACD y DVD-A de Tommy:

"What I do love about SACD is the stereo — which nobody seems to praise — I think it’s a big, big step forward from CD sound. Although when I delivered Tori Amos’s album to Sony in SACD stereo they said they didn’t want it... they were only interested in 5.1... but it sounded fantastic!"
