Sony Adds D-Box Support


Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed the specs for the upcoming Blu-ray release of the Arnold Schwarzenegger film 'The 6th Day', and a surprise addition will be support for D-Box home theater seating. Joining other film studios who include the motion software on their Blu-ray releases, Sony is the latest to provide support for the unique home theater experience.

Sony Announces Two New Blu-ray Players


Sony Electronics has announced two new players to their Blu-ray line, the BDP-S350 and the BDP-S550. When released, both will not only be BonusView (Profile v1.1) players, but will also be BD-Live (Profile v2.0) ready, meaning they can be updated via firmware to full BD-Live compatibility. The BDP-S350 will ship sometime in the Summer for $400, followed in the Fall by the BDP-S550 for $500.

The BDP-S350 will offer 1080p24/60 output via HDMI, an Ethernet port, and decoding of 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD. The player will also be capable of bit streaming Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio to a capable receiver. Additionally, it will support for the expanded xvYCC color space during playback of AVCHD discs, and compatibility with most BD, DVD, and CD media.

In addition to having all the features of the S350, the BDP-S550 will feature 1GB of storage of persistent storage. Additionally, it will decode DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio and feature 7.1 analog outs.

Verbatim Increase Blu-ray Production


Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, more universally known as Verbatim, has announced the addition of a BD-R line to their Singapore processing plant in the July/August timeframe. They currently output 200,000 discs per month at their Mizsushima factory, and with the addition of their new line, that output will increase to 700,000 per month.

NetBlender Adds Blu-ray Support

NetBlender has announced that they will add Blu-ray support to their DoStudio line of authoring software. DoStudio Authoring Edition (DSA), which in expected to be released this May, will feature an easy-to-learn GUI interface and support for Adobe Photoshop importing. BonusView support will be added to the package in the Fall, followed by BD-Live support which is expected to be released early next year.

Crackeado el DRM de los discos Blu-Ray

El DRM de los discos Blu-Ray, ese que se anunció sería completamente inviolable durante “al menos diez años y de una manera que únicamente serviría para una película y un reproductor” y cuya promesa de seguridad fue uno de los factores decisivos en la guerra de formatos con HD-DVD, ha sido perfectamente crackeado (ver noticia en Slashdot o en Boing Boing), hasta el punto de que la duplicación de discos Blu-Ray ya se ofrece ya, ocho meses después, como una opción más dentro de la última versión del programa AnyDVD, de SlySoft. Lo mejor del caso es que el crack se terminó de desarrollar hace ya meses, pero se decidió esperar para anunciarlo “por razones estratégicas” a que la guerra de los formatos hubiese concluído, como comentan en la nota de prensa de SlySoft:

“Richard Doherty of the Envisioneering Group will have to revise his statement from July, 2007 regarding BD+: “BD+, unlike AACS which suffered a partial hack last year, won’t likely be breached for 10 years”. It is worth mentioning that since he made that statement only eight months have gone by (…) Admittedly, we are not really so fast with this because actually we had intended to publish this release already in December as promised. However, it was decided for strategic reasons to wait a bit for the outcome of the “format war” between HD DVD and Blu-ray.”

BD+ es una protección DRM basada en una máquina virtual desarrollada por BD+ Technologies y ofrecida como licencia a los creadores de contenidos, y representa el enésimo intento de poner barreras a los bits. Un intento que una vez más ha resultado completamente ridículo. Como ridículo resulta ahora pensar en el resultado de la tan traída y llevada “guerra de los formatos” entre Blu-Ray y HD-DVD, con estudios y productores apoyando a Sony porque “su DRM era inviolable”…
Según SlySoft, las películas puestas hasta el momento en el mercado no han explotado aún plenamente las posibilidades de BD+ y posiblemente vayamos a tener “mejoras” en el nivel de protección ofrecidas en los próximos meses, pero se ven “perfectamente preparados para ello y esperan los próximos desarrollos muy relajados”, con un escenario pesimista consistente en “nuestro jefe encerrándonos a pan y agua en la mazmorra corporativa durante tres meses hasta que volvamos a tener éxito”. El CEO de SlySoft, Giancarlo Bettini, invita además a los estudios a reconsiderar su salida de HD-DVD, un formato que, según él, “merece una segunda oportunidad, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que sus dispositivos habían obtenido una cuota de mercado más alta en los últimos meses que los de Sony”.

Esto último me resulta de lo más chocante. ¿Será que los de Slysoft no quieren perder la inversión para crackear los HD-DVD?

Oscar Best Picture winner No Country for Old Men also is a winner on Blu-ray Disc.

Retailers report that the Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment March 11 release is generating 10% to 15% of its sales on Blu-ray, which is higher than the average 5% to 10% on major day-and-date DVD/BD new release.

DeepDiscount.com, Newbury Comics and Virgin Megastores all report No Country skewing higher Blu than other titles.

Store managers attribute No Country’s Blu-ray muscle to both the caché of the Oscar-decorated title and the fall of the HD DVD format.

Disney did not comment.

“We did over 100 on Blu-ray, and over 1,000 [overall] in the first week No Country was on sale,” said Ian Leshin, buyer for Newbury’s 27 New England stores. “That’s a big number. Since the HD DVD side of things folded, we have seen a marked improvement in Blu-ray sales. [Customers] are feeling comfortable buying into the format.”

David T. Barker, VP of ecommerce marketing for DeepDiscount parent Infinity Resources, said, No Country “is running at about 15% Blu-ray, which is stronger than normal. The format is certainly on the rise, but in my opinion, it’s the strength of the title.”

Retailers expect BD to continue to be an increasing part of titles’ sales. Barker also thought Disney’s March 18 release Enchanted should enjoy BD heft, as 8% of its sales were in the format on street date at DeepDiscount.

“We’re seeing key new release titles on Blu-ray, like No Country, exceed 10% of total sales,” said Chris Anstey, Virgin senior product manager. “This trend will continue on new releases as the format gradually comes into its own.”
