Sip, es como dice fashionetti. Te hago un copy paste de algo que escribí hace unos días en el hilo de los altavoces de xinelo (simplemente donde diga "etapa de potencia", cámbialo por "altavoz activo" ):

Esta recomendación ya la he leído en otras ocasiones y creo que no es acertada.

El volumen de la etapa de potencia actúa como "multiplicador" de la señal de entrada. Y no necesariamente debe estar al máximo, lo que debe ocurrir es que el máximo nivel de la señal de entrada sea suficiente para llevar la etapa a entregar el máximo de potencia, para no tener a esta última desaprovechada.

Obviamente, teniendo la etapa al máximo te aseguras de que no va a estar desaprovechada, pero en general esto es contraproducente, ya que obliga a bajar mucho el nivel de señal que le llega a la etapa para no producir clipping en la salida. Y bajar mucho el nivel de señal de entrada provoca que la relación señal/ruido disminuya, y ese ruido "extra" se ve posteriormente amplificado por la etapa de potencia.

Lo ideal es mantener la SNR al máximo posible antes de llegar a la etapa de potencia. Por supuesto, también hay que tener cuidado de no clipear la señal antes de enviársela a la etapa, así que tampoco es cuestión de poner el previo al máximo y listo.

Aquí comentan algo más técnicamente esto que digo:

Proper gain structure minimizes the noise floor in a sound system. The best you can possibly do is to reduce the noise at the output (coming out of the speaker) to the level of the input noise times the total system gain. Since every stage (device) in the signal chain adds noise, any gain that occurs after a stage amplifies the noise that it added. For this reason, it is always best to maximize gain (without clipping anything, obviously) as early as possible in the signal chain. Since a line-level device cannot produce enough voltage swing to drive a loudspeaker, there must always be some amount of gain in the power amplifier. Minimizing noise requires that you set this gain to the minimum required to produce the SPL you want. That means you need to send the hottest possible signal to your power amp and then set its level control to get the desired volume.



In my experience, most amps run optimum at between 1 and 2 o'clock on the vol. Any more than that and most power supplies start to sag, at least ss ones.Incorrect. Here's the thing that many people miss: the setting of the level control on the power amplifier has nothing to do with how much power it can put out. If you turn the amplifier level down but then turn then increase the level of the signal going into it to compensate, you have not changed how much power the amplifier is putting out. If you were driving it into rail sag before making the offsetting level adjustments, you will still be doing so after.

P.D. Es más, si fuera como comentáis, el control de volumen en un subwoofer activo debería estar siempre al máximo para no tenerlo desaprovechado, ¿no? Al fin y al cabo el ampli del sub también es una etapa de potencia.
