Does this mean that that the 205 can be used as a stand alone preamp negating the need for any other processor equipment for 2ch and 5.1/7.1ch? Would there be anything missing from such a set up?
Thanks
The Analog outs of the 205 are designed to feed the inputs of a pre-amp. Typically you would leave Volume at 100 (or "Fixed" which does the same thing) to send a full scale signal to the pre-amp, and Volume adjustment would be done in the pre-amp.
Just as with the 105 and 105D it is possible to cable the 205 directly to a well-matched power-amp, and use Volume control in the 205 -- thus avoiding the need for a pre-amp in between. HOWEVER, not every power amp will work well in such a configuration. The first thing you would look for is whether the inputs of the power amp have high impedance. Just compare the typical input impedance of quality pre-amps and a range of power amps and you'll see what I mean.
It's also important that the gain of the power amp not be so high that you have to use low values of the Volume control in the 205 to get a comfortable listening level. A mismatch or this type can often be addressed by putting high quality attenuators between the OPPO and the power amp.
