Sony SA-VE315

Great value if you want that extra sonic element for home cinema, but not for the enthusiast

The principal distinguishing feature of this system is that it's cheap. Very cheap. But this doesn't mean that it is pitched at the bottom end of the market. Just the opposite, as this is a system that punches well outside its weight.

The satellites are quite unusual in that they use a single drive unit to cover the entire frequency range. The other example of such a design in this roundup is the Bose system, which uses a small round driver, about the diameter of a large portable radio loudspeaker. The disadvantage of this single driver is that it is physically incapable of responding quickly enough to fast-acting treble frequencies. The long, narrow rectangular drive units used here represent a compromise that goes some way to solving the treble problem. The enclosures are vented, and made from relatively thin moulded plastic, which is not ideal but which is inevitable given the very low price.

The subwoofer is a slender box design with a moulded front panel and a cloth insert that conceals the rectangular bass driver and, below that, a reflex port. On the top is an on/off switch, level control and a music/movie switch, which allows you to choose between bass depth and 'upper bass slam' which is so often confused with true bass. On the back of the sub are the line inputs, and speaker inputs and outputs for the main loudspeakers.

There is no magic here, expect perhaps how Sony managed to shave the price so close to the bone, but the SA-VE315 works, and it does so remarkably well when you consider the price. It tends to sound a little raw used fresh from the box, and the subwoofer needs winding up quite a bit before it starts to deliver the goods, but when it finally gets its act into gear, it sounds full and fruity, yet surprisingly clean and civilised. It plugs the gap adequately once the volume is turned high. The movie/music switch works pretty well. It you like the sound of speakers losing control, and subwoofers sounding overcooked, use the cinema setting. The music setting is far superior, and even manages to sound vaguely in control for most of the time, though it's a close run thing if anything approaching realistic volume levels are required. Even normal listening levels push the 315 almost to the limit.

The satellites are excellent, which is surprising given the low price. They sound clear as a bell, although slightly on the light and shallow side of neutral, and treble quality is refreshingly clean and detailed considering that there is no true dedicated tweeter. Those rectangular Sony drivers really sing! We're impressed.

Overall, this system is good value, and if the idea is to outperform a Dolby Digital/Pro-Logic TV, the Sony should do the job well enough. However, there is nothing here to frighten makers of separates-based home cinema speaker systems, or even some of the more costly compact systems in this roundup. The price is its main virtue.
Subwoofer

Subwoofer Sony SA-VE315
