Get ready for marketing buzzwords with the PNF8500 using Real Black Pro, a third-generation Real Black Filter with nanocarbon compound, and Deep Black Algorithm II. So what does all this mean? Last year's plasmas struggled to output enough light to even meet our test standards, so Samsung says the new TV should have 2.5 times the brightness while also deepening black levels.

The Samsung PN64F8500 is going to be a bold blockbuster seller for 2013 and early 2014. It's got excellent upgrades from the prior E8000 series that it replaces such as 400% better black levels, 2.5 times better brightness (peak whites), an excellently revamped voice recognition feature, and OLED like contrast and rich, deep colors.

Samsung deems the panel for this TV the Super Contrast Panel and this is the only plasma in Samsung's lineup for 2013 to contain this panel. There are many similarities between the picture quality on this plasma and a new OLED TV – rich saturated colors, inky blacks, perfect side angle viewing, and incredible contrast. In addition to the 4X improvement in blacks, the PN64F8500 has 2.5 times greater whites (brightness) for tons of range in gray scaling.

Samsung has incorporated a “local dimming” technology in the F8500 series plasma as well to help further the extreme contrast being offered. The picture quality of this new plasma is just stunning. But this features primary objective is to fight motion judder on the screen.

In fact, the image quality is close to OLED, featuring the many benefits of plasma display technology, but with dazzling brightness which is out of the ordinary. The “Real Black” technology also worked very effectively on the brightly-lit show floor, rejecting a good amount of ambient light. That bodes very well for its performance in more subdued home environments. Here’s a list of improvements Samsung claims to have implemented on the F8500 PDP:

- Not only is light output on the top end brighter, black level at the low end is also better, resulting in greater contrast performance both ways.
- Better pre-calibrated picture quality is promised.

They state it will have the same brightness levels and 8 times the black expression of a regular LED. That could be a very bright plasma. I believe typical LEDs can hit 300+ cd/m2 easily. Some around 400. Current e7000/e8000s are around 170 cd/m2. I've always thought cranking up the brightness on Plasmas was asking for trouble.

A Samsung rep discussed one of the main reasons why plasma TVs have declined in sales. When you go to the TV section of your favorite big-box retailer, TVs are usually lining a wall like paintings in an art gallery. Since these stores are extremely bright and plasma TVs do not have bright screens, they look dull and less colorful compared to LED models. Why the hell would you want the TV with the lifeless picture? With the F8500, Samsung hopes to change that.

However, it appears that with the PS51F8500 and PS64F8500, Samsung has taken this to a whole new level. The Korean company claims that its new plasma TV range for 2013 sports now just the deepest blacks available, but also the brightest picture. It quantifies this by asserting that the F8500 gives the same brightness level as its LED TVs such as the Samsung F8000, but with “eight times the black expression” – read, dark detailing and black levels. It’s helped along here by Samsung’s proprietary Deep Black Algorithm and Real Black Pro II.
