SonyBMG plan year of classical releases on SA-CD
Hot on the heels of SonyBMG’s release of John Legend, Duran Duran, John Mayer and Switchfoot on Super Audio CD, the record company has announced three new classical Super Audio CD titles slated for January release on its Sony Classical label. Building on a series of highly successful SA-CD releases, such as its Living Stereo set, this new collection features multi-award winning celloist Yo-Yo Ma (Yo-Yo Ma plays Ennio Morricone) together with the original movie soundtracks to The Legend of Zorro (James Horner) and The Phantom of the Opera.
Furthermore, SonyBMG has indicated further SA-CD projects in 2006 including five complete opera recordings from the Living Stereo Series, which are due for release this Autumn. Also, the company has decided that most of its future Harnoncourt material will be released on Super Audio CD.
“I believe that the surround sound aspect of Super Audio CD is a great feature, but more important to me is the higher resolution rate,” commented SonyBMG’s Gilbert Hetherwick. “The old argument from so-called ‘audiophiles’ that digital cannot match analogue doesn't hold anymore. I believe our re-issues of the Living Stereo line to be proof of the importance of this higher resolution as the releases perfectly mirror the original three track masters.
”We chose the coming soundtrack releases of Phantom and Zorro as the music in both cases has great dynamics and depth. And the music was also recorded with surround sound in mind for the film,” explains Hetherwick.
“As all of our Super Audio CD releases for the past couple of years have been hybrid releases it is hard to determine how much the Super Audio CD format has affected sales, but I believe that this had to be a positive factor in the Living Stereo titles as the releases have done well despite their having been already re-issued many times in the past,” concludes Gilbert Hetherwick.
